Baskara Sparsa Pooja
Soorya's Worship of Siva
At Chettikulam Ékambarésvara Temple
Part 3 of 5

3. Kulsapandhuruni Moolika Herb
A Chettikulam Speciality
One of the specialities of the Chettikulam Ékambaresvara temple is that it is home to a very rare moolika herb called kulsapandhuruni. This herb can be seen only during the sisira ruthu (mid February to mid April). This moolika packs prithvi bootha energy which, among other things, is essential for the creation of life and the generation of physical forms.

All beings and objects in the universe are made up of the pancha bootha, the five elements. One of these is prithvi bootha.

The spiritual science of breath known as pranayama identifies three main svaasa kalai types in the subtle nervous system of the body. These are svaasa (breath) in Soorya kalai or right nostril, svaasa in Chandra kalai or left nostril and svaasa in suzhumunai or equally through both nostrils. In addition, there are five nodal points in the nostrils corresponding to the five bootha elements. Thus our breath is classified to be progressing in any one of 15 (3 kalai X 5 bootha = 15) ways at any instant. This is an elementary introduction to the advanced Siddha science of svaasa yoga or vaasi yoga.

So exalted is the spiritual state of the kulsapandhuruni moolika herb that unless you are a master of vaasi yoga and have the Sathguru's grace totally, you can not even see it. How many of us have these qualifications? Very few. So how can the rest of the world get the spiritual benefits of the kulsapandhuruni herb? We can get it by proxy when it's made available by proxy on Baskara Sparsa Pooja days!

Effects of Kulsapandhuruni Moolika
One of the specialities of the kulsapandhuruni moolika herb is that it strengthens, fortifies and enhances the jeeva sakthi or life force in humans. It improves the sperm count in males. This coupled with the subtle prithvi boomi life forces in this temple make this place ideal for the fortification of life forces. These spiritual benefits are available to those who partake of the Lord's prasadam offered by Baskara sparsa deksha on all three days mentioned earlier.

The Siddhas make the spiritual potencies of this herb and the prithvi boomi life forces available to those who do selfless service in this temple. This service includes cleaning, renovation, restoration, upkeep of the temple, the conduct of all spiritual observances in the temple, selfless service to the poor including feeding, clothing and sheltering them.

The moolika's jeeva sakthi enhancing trait is fed into the Baskara sparsa rays by the Siddhas and thus made available as a sookshma (subtle) medicinal tonic to humans. Thus those who are present during Baskara sparsa pooja get their jeeva sakthi (life force) enhanced.

Goodbye to Childlessness
There are many couples who are just not able to conceive children. These couples lead sad lives because of their inability to have children. Begetting children is totally a blessing from God based on the karma of past births. But humans must do their part by resorting to the right kind of medicinal help and by sincere prayer. Many a time, couples can't conceive because of insufficient sperm count in the male. If this is the problem, worry not - the Lord's grace prasadam given to us by Baskara sparsa deeksha mixed with the spiritual potencies of the kulsapandhuruni moolika and the prithvi boomi in this temple can solve this problem.

These couples must visit this temple on all three days and witness Baskara's sparsa pooja. They must feed the poor using dishes made with wheat and they must distribute orange colored clothes to the poor. (Both wheat based dishes and orange colored clothing please Sri Soorya.) If they do this, the Lord will bless them accordingly. This kind of selfless service wins us the blessings of the pithru beings; it's good if we do this service to the poor year around. (Also refer to the article on the eternal akshaya vadam and how it helps nullify pithru dosham.)

Good Health and Longevity
It's important that all of us partake of the spiritual potencies of the kulsapandhuruni moolika herb and the prithvi boomi energy at the Chettikulam temple. This is because a good sperm count is not just necessary for conceiving children but is also essential for good health and longevity.

Chemicals used in the production of modern day foods are detrimental to our health in the long term. Even vitamins have chemical effects on the body which can cause problems later on. To protect the body from these harmful effects, one must consume moolika herbs everyday. Examples of these herbs include thulasi (basil, Ocymum sanctum), vilvam (Cratæva religiosa), ponnaanganni (Illecebrum sessile), pudhina (mint), karuvépilai (Bergera konigii) curry leaves, arugam pul (Asclepias gigantca), vallaarai (Indian Pennywort) and so on.

These divine moolika herbs not only build disease fighting capability in our body, but also endow us with spiritual strength because of their strong spiritual vibrations. So all of us (not just childless couples) must partake of the Lord's grace prasadam given to us by Baskara sparsa deeksha on all three days at Chettikulam. This prasadam, which is packed with the subtle force of the kulsapandhuruni moolika herb and prithvi boomi energies, blesses us with good health and longevity.

 An Agasthiar Nugget
For a peaceful, spiritual sleep devoid of improper dreams, recite the following verse before going to bed:
paadha malar kandu naanum paasam
udan paadi unnai thamizh
véda malar thooviyé thudhitthu
un paadha idai pattich charkarai
chaadham vaitthu saantham enum
nin arul pazham padaitthu anbu
geedham paadiyé keertthanai
puriya véndum amma

The result of this practice will not only be sleep devoid of improper dreams, but also visions of the Universal Mother in your sleep. This song is part of Sathguru Venkataraman's composition, Sri Angaala Paramésvari Andhaadhi, 101 songs on the Universal Mother.

Pregnancy and Chettikulam
Pregnant women must circle the Chettikulam temple frequently using the adi pradakshinam technique wherein the heel of one foot is placed where the tips of the toes of the other are. This technique ensures that we come into contact with every inch of the perimeter of the shrine. This contact with the prithvi boomi in this temple and breathing the air therein which is full of the medicinal properties of the kulsapandhuruni herb will endow the fetus with divine grace. Therefore expectant mothers must circle this temple and thus become instruments through which this priceless spiritual blessing is given to the babies growing inside them.

During Pregnancy...
Mother Aurobindo (1878 - 1973), a great female Siddha, was once visited by a woman who had twin girls that resembled those in a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The Mother enquired about this and the woman said that she did have a copy of that very same painting in her bedroom while she was pregnant with these kids. She would look at that picture just before going to sleep and on waking up. In her heart she hoped that her children would like those in the painting. The Mother commented that the woman, without knowing it, was able to influence the appearance of her babies purely by her thoughts. The Mother further remarked that her example can be of use to other women. Thus much can be achieved through concentrated thought alone. In the world of spirituality, much is achieved through sincere yearning alone.

What the above incident underscores is the need for spiritual thoughts duiring pregnancy. Imagine if the woman had concentrated on a painting of Sri Rama & Seetha. Her children would have looked like Rama and Seetha! So make sure that you don't do anything non spiritual during conception and pregnancy, because that will have an effect on your children. For example, only sing or hum songs of a spiritual nature. The spiritual vibrations that are produced in the process will reach the fetus just as in the case of the lady and the painting.

Pray for children who will grow up to be spiritual beings who will serve the Lord and the poor selflessly. This is the perfect prayer for all expectant mothers.

Siddha Sookshma Pravésam Miracles
We remarked above that much can be achieved through concentrated thought alone. If this is true for humans, imagine how much more so it will be in the case of the Siddhas. The Siddhas are beings who have perfect control over their thought processes. They can do anything with the power of thought alone.

As a result of our sincere prayer and our partaking of the Lord's prasadam via Baskara sparsa deeksha, we become eligible for the blessings of the Siddhas. This blessing is our reward for our sincerity.

For those with sperm count problems, the Siddhas can take a sookshma (subtle) form and give the sperm the strength that carries it forward and results in conception. This is the art of sookshma pravésam, a Siddha speciality. There is a special catergory of Siddhas known as Rudra Vidya Siddhas who are responsible for placing the right soul in the right womb. The Siddhas can take a form smaller than an atom and do things that are beyond our comprehension. They are authorized by God to do this in deserving cases.

How was Parikshith saved in the womb from Asvatthaama's brahmastra weapon? By Sri Krishna's sookshma pravésam in Uttara's womb and His protection of the fetus therein. The Lord has granted these powers to the Siddhas too.

Those who partake of the Lord's grace prasadam through Soorya's sparsa deeksha are authorized to receive this grace of the Siddhas. They can enter and strengthen us in a subtle way through many different methods. In the Chettikulam Ékambarésvara temple, they do it by mixing the spiritual potencies of the kulsapandhuruni moolika and the prithvi boomi in the Lord's grace prasadam which is given to us by Soorya Himself. They enter us through Soorya's sparsa deeksha. They enter us as divine emissaries authorized to grant the gift of children and good health. This is the spiritual magic behind Baskara sparsa pooja at Chettikulam and the invisible hand of God working for our welfare. This is the Siddha insight into the subtle workings of God as conveyed by that master of Siddhas, Sri Agasthiar to his Sathguru lineage and to us by Sathguru Venkataraman.
