Kaama Dhahanam

The Incineration of Improper Desires, Particularly Lust

Mar/7/2ØØ1

Lust Eradication

Kaama = desire.
Dhahanam = burning, incineration.
Kaama Dhahanam = incineration of desire.

But the Siddhas know that not all of humankind is ready to incinerate all desires! So they soften the definition of kaama dhahanam to mean the incineration of improper desires. We humans do not have to get rid of all desires, just the improper ones, they say!

Why is this important? Because getting rid of improper desires is one of the prerequisites of spiritual life.

The Kaama Dhahanam day (Mar/7/2ØØ1) is an ideal day for starting the spiritual process of ridding oneself of improper desires, particularly lust.

What are Improper Desires?

Sri Rama, The Perfect One Desiring anything without deserving it in the first place is improper!

Desiring a comfortable life for ourselves and our families within our means is acceptable. But when these desires over step these boundaries of contentment, they become improper.

There are many many improper desires. Yearning to hit the jackpot is an improper desire. Wanting to win the lottery is improper. Desiring to become the president on one's company without having the necessary qualifications is improper. In short, Desiring anything without deserving it in the first place is improper, say the Siddhas.

Most importantly, the worst of all improper desires is coveting another's man or woman. Lust is the beginning of a lot of spiritual hardships, say the Siddhas.

What's the spiritual impact of improper desires? They propel us towards improper thoughts, words and deeds which result in very quick accumulation of a lot of bad karma. Since bad karma is a big hindrance to spiritual life, improper desires, being the cause, create huge spiritual hurdles for us.

One Man, One Woman is Lord Rama's Teaching

Sri Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Hanuman One of the important lessons that Lord Rama and Mother Seetha taught us is eka pathni vratham and eka purusha vratham, i.e., leading a happy family life with one spouse. One must not entertain any sexual thoughts outside this spousal boundary, say the Siddhas.

In fact, the Siddhas are very precise on this issue. They say that the sex act can not be allowed more than once in a fortnight. Anything above and beyond this would be considered improper, a sexual excess. Humankind needs to pay attention to this Siddha prescription.

The SIN of Sexual Overtones

But in this age, movies, TV and magazines bombard everyone with images of a sexual nature. This is a modern disease, say the Siddhas. The Siddha injunctions on this issue are very clear:
-It's a sin to display sexual images.
-It's a sin to write or sing songs that have sexual overtones.
-It's a sin to publish, buy or pose in sex oriented magazines. The same applies to sex oriented movies and Web sites.
-Masturbation is a sin.
-It's a sin to joke about sexual matters.
-It's a sin to think, say or do anything which propels someone else towards sex or heightens the sexual impulses of others.
These sins result in the accumulation of mountains of bad karma. The bad karma resulting from these improper sex related thoughts, words and deeds manifest themselves as diseases of the reproductive organs, say the Siddhas. Humans of the world, pay heed to these Siddha injunctions if you don't want to suffer the results of this bad karma.

How can one protect oneself from accumulating sex related bad karma? How can one defend oneself from succumbing to the bombardment of sex related content? There are many Siddha procedures. Here are a few of them:
1. Do not watch movies or TV or read magazines that have sex related content. This is spiritual sadhana in the modern world; this is spiritual discipline.
2. Rein in your mind by chanting Lord Rama's Gayathri mantra constantly:
Om thath purushaaya vithmahé
eka pathni vrathaaya dheemahi
thannas Seetha Ramachandra prachodhayaath.
3. Chant the following mantra composed by the Sathguru, Guru Mangala Gandharva Venkataraman in honor of Mother Angaali, the Most Compassionate One, a minimum of 1008 times daily:
aadu anaithu aattamum neeyé aadu
ullak kaamak kaadu azhindhidavé
kaali endré aadu
en manam naadum naaraayani
nalamigu ivvézhu ulagum paadum paadum
parasakthi endré paadum.
4. Teach your children to chant the Gayathri mantra from a very young age. Gayathri must enter your kids much much before kaaman (lust) enters your kids, say the Siddhas.
5. Observe the Kaama Dhahanam Siddha worship procedures described below.

The Role of Women

It pains the Siddhas that the women of this world are contributing to this lust disease in an active way. Women are the stronger sex, they say. Women are better than men in spiritual pursuits like dhyaanam, yoga, thapas and in spiritual qualities like patience, self control and surrender to the Divine Will. Given this stronger spiritual position, women should not contribute to this modern lust disease. Rather than flaunt their flesh, women should be guardians of propriety in society and the bedrock of good morals, say the Siddhas. Women of the world, pay heed to this Siddha advice and teach your daughters the same.

Kaama Dhahanam - A Solution to the Disease of Improper Desires

Sri Siva Yogeesvara, Lord of Yogis What can we do to make sure that the lust disease doesn't wreak havoc, particularly amongst the younger generation, to establish a good, moral foundation in society, to make sure that the boys and girls of today and the future lead lives of virtue and chastity, to make sure that they don't fall prey to the vices of the modern world, to make sure that they will follow eka pathni vratham and eka purusha vratham as demonstrated by Lord Rama and Mother Seetha? We can observe the kaama dhahanam festival as instructed by the Siddhas.

Bad karma results whether we commit a sin knowingly or unknowingly. But the hallmark of a human being is to realize the mistake and seek methods for expiating the sin, say the Siddhas. The kaama dhahanam day is a good time to start the process of expiating all lust related sins.

On the kaama dhahanam day, not only can we incinerate the improper desires of the past and the present , we can also bring about the generation of positive spiritual forces that can guard us in the future against the disease of improper desires.

Because of its positive effects on all of society, the kaama dhahanam festival is meant to be observed by an entire village or town.

On this day, wear yellow colored clothes; yellow denotes auspiciousness and chastity for both men and women. Perform kaama bimba agni pooja as described below, pray to Lord Ganesh and all other deities and request the blessings of Rathi and Manmatha. Pray for a virtuous society, one which is not afflicted by the disease of improper desires.

Performing this worship at the Thrailoki shrine where Rathi and Manmatha received the vision of the Lord is particularly appropriate.

Kaama Bimba Agni Pooja

Using pure cotton, make an effigy representing improper desires. Add volume to the face using rice and wheat grains. Use urad dal grains to create the ears. Use turmeric powder to create the nose. Apply sacred ash, turmeric, kumkum and sandalwood paste to the face.

Use lentils (dal) of all kinds, hay, samith twigs from sacred trees used in havan fire ceremonies to create the trunk of the effigy. Create the arms using sesame seeds (thil), erukku, cashews and samith twigs. Use barley grains, full peanuts (ground nuts) and similar items to create the legs and feet.

Dig a hole in the ground in front of a Siva Lingam or a form of Lord Siva and place the effigy in this hold. Pour sesame (gingelly) oil, coconut oil, ghee made from cow's milk, butter made from cow's milk, iluppai oil, castor oil and neem oil and light the effigy using camphor.

Through out the process, recite hymns in honor of Lord Siva such as Rudram, Chamakam, Siva Puranam and Thiru Thaandakam.

Carefully circle the fire while reciting the following song:

pirai soodi pinjaganaai
marai naalum maa malaraai
irai aalum eesa-pathi em
kurai theerum kaamak kurai theerum.

When the effigy is reduced to ashes, perform abishekam, alankaar and other worship procedures for Lord Siva and pray to Him for expiation of sins related to improper desires.

On this day, gift new clothes to the poor and the needy. This is an important Siddha procedure to cure the lust disease.

What you find above are Siddha procedures for Kaama Dhahanam, the incineration of improper desires. Make sure that you follow these spiritual procedures on Mar/7/2ØØ1.
