Sri Karaneeswarar Temple - 1st of the 7 Saptha Sthaana Shiva Temples in Mylapore, Chennai This temple is the abode of Sri Karaneeswara and Mother Porkodi Amman. It is in the middle stretch of Bazaar Road in Mylapore. It is about half a kilometer from the Kapali temple. Karana means cause. Karana + Iswara = Karaneeswara, the Lord who is the Cause. He is the primordial cause of this universe which is His very form. He is also the Lord who can teach us the causality behind all events. Imagine the number of events which happen in this universe in a split second. From the rustling of leaves in every tree to the scurrying of insects and the thoughts and actions of man, how many happenings in every instant! It is Lord Karaneeswara who can instruct us on the causality of each and every happening. There is a reason behind everything that happens, everything that moves, every thought, every action. And it is Lord Karaneewara, the Lord who is the Cause, who can teach us the secret of these mysteries. It is with His blessings that we can evolve on the spiritual path and learn the secrets of the world of the Divine. It is He who can dispel the doubts in our mind and lead us on the spiritual path. Thus He is the first one to be worshipped in the Mylapore Saptha Sthaana worship procedure. Is that all? How about those who want material blessings? Lord Karaneeswara is more than happy to grant material boons as well. The worship of Sri Karaneeswara and Mother Porkodi blesses one with a happy family life; there will be much amicability amongst all members of the family. Mix coconut oil, sesame oil (gingelly) and castor oil in equal parts and use this mixture to light oil lamps in multiples of six (6, 12, 18, 24 and so on) in this temple.
