Significance of "Chatra Seva" - Divine Royal Umbrella Service Worship Procedure

The Sacred Royal Umbrella (see pictures above and below) is emblematic of the divine kingdom and the support it vouchsafes for devotees and sincere aspirants.

It is a royal insignia of the One True Royal Couple, the Lord Almighty and the Mother Divine.

It signifies the protective hand of God.

It tells us that the Their Divine Majesties support and sustain devotees, spiritual aspirants, everyone and everything.

This is why the Sacred Royal Umbrella is an important part of the paraphernalia in temple services. See pictures above and below. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

The Divine Royal Parasol!
Us Humans and the Sacred Royal Umbrella

Taking part in the chatra seva by holding aloft the umbrella over the deity forms of the Lord and the Mother is a great blessing. Lord Shatrughna did it for Lord Rama and Mother Sita during Their coronation. Mother Sita Herself did it too, as you will find out later in this article.

Arranging for "Chatrotsava" - the Sacred Umbrella Festival - in ancient temples (particularly in sacred spaces like Ammanichatram where it was prevalent) is a HUGE blessing, especially if it is done selflessly.

How Worship Procedures are given to humankind

This sacred umbrella seva had to be brought down to planet earth and given to us so that we may perform it and benefit greatly from it.

So who is qualified to bring this symbol of divine protection, support and sustenance to planet earth and give it as a powerful worship procedure to us?

Well... who else but the Divine Mother Herself! But then, was She just going to do a lecture demo of it? No! That would not do. She would rather perform it Herself and show us by example. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

What does the word "chatra" mean?

The commonly understood meaning of the word "chatram" is "guesthouse for pilgrims."

But the word "chatram" also means umbrella.

And it is this latter meaning that is most relevant to the Siddha secrets of this sacred space of Ammanichatram relayed to us by Sathguru Venkataraman.

Chatra Seva for Lord Ganesh

Gratitude and the Tender Divine Heart

During the months She was kept captive, Mother Seetha Devi thought about how well Lord Shri Ram had cared for Her in the forest and how beautifully Lord Lakshmana had served Them both making Them feel as though They were in the palace in Ayodhya.

It was Their duty of course - Lord Ram's since He was the husband and Lord Lakshman's since He had sworn to serve Them both.

But Mother Sita's tender heart - the heart that gave Lord Hanuman the most beautiful blessings ever and the heart that is eager to bless us - decided that She had to express Her gratitude in such a way that would not just be an expression of gratitude but would also benefit humankind forever. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

Lord Sri SUNDARA KODANDA RAMA of Ammanichatram

Nava Natha Siddha Secret: How an Expression of Gratitude resulted in Great Spiritual Gain for us

After Lord Shri Ram destroyed the asura demon Ravana and his cohorts, Mother Sita Devi was united with Him.

Their Divinities, along with Lord Lakshman, visited many sacred spots on the southern coast of India such as Rameswaram, Mimisal, Theerthandadanam and others. One of these sacred spots is the little village of Ammanichatram.

Accompanied by Mother Seetha and Lord Lakshman, Lord Ram, the ultimate Yogi, would do padayatra - pilgrimage by foot, an extremely powerful spiritual practice. When they reached this sacred space of Ammanichatram, Mother Sita's divine will resolved that this was the sacred space destined for the expression of her gratitude and benefaction of humankind.

As the divine brothers walked in the hot sun, Mother Seeta decided that She would Herself hold an umbrella over Them and thus demonstrate how this seva should be done. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

With the help of the locals, she collected leaves from 100 sacred plants and trees such as lotus, lily, banyan, peepul, purasu leaves.

Using these, She constructed big umbrellas and held them over Rama and Lakshmana in the presence of great lady rishis such as Gargi and Maitreyi.

Thus, by Her own personal example, She showed us how to do this seva and gave it to us a powerful worship procedure that can bless us in many ways.

Chatrotsava - the divine umbrella festival - was thus first instituted here and given to humankind for our benefit.

It is only fitting that this worship procedure be resumed in this sacred space of Ammanichatram in honor of Mother Sita who blessed us with it.

"Ammani" - Most Respected Lady - said Lord Hanuman!

One day, as Mother Sita walked behind Rama and Lakshmana holding the large umbrella that She had herself made, Lord Hanuman was observing the proceedings with respect as usual.

But the sheer beauty of the seva and Mother Sita's tender divine heart overwhelmed Him and out of bhakti ecstasy, He cried out to Her: "Ammani!" This word means "most respected lady." The locals joined in and there were joyful shouts of "Ammani" addressed at the Lotus Feet of Mother Sita.

This soulful expression of Lord Hanuman and many human hearts overwhelmed Mother Sita in turn. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

Lord Rama's Words

It was time for Lord Shri Ram to bring this leela (divine play) to the blissful ananda state. The blessed Lord said:
"This place where Ammani Sita did chatra seva will be known as Ammanichatram in Her honor and in honor of Her grateful seva. By following Her example of chatra seva, humans will receive great blessings. Let them do it in fond remembrance of Her giving a celestial worship procedure of the Devas to humans of terrestrial earth."

Thus the history of this sacred space goes back all the way to the Treta Yuga of Lord Shri Ram Himself. It is the place where the precious chatra seva worship procedure of the Devas was given by the the Divine Mother Herself to us humans.

The command of Lord Shri Ram about "chatra seva" was issued not just to the locals of Ammanichatram. It was addressed to humankind as a whole and must be heeded by one and all as a precious duty.

This beautiful divine episode that you read above is just one of the "Irudigal Ramayana" secrets of the Nava Natha Siddhas (concerning this sacred space of Ammanichatram) that was given to us by Sathguru Venkataraman.

Thank your pitru ancestral beings, for it is because of their good deeds that you are able to learn this Siddha secret.

The Need of the Hour

(1) Right now, pooja is done just once a day at this temple. Devotees should arrange for formal worship of Lord Sundara Kodanda Rama, Mother Sita, Lord Lakshmana and Lord Hanuman 6 times a day at this shrine at the 6 prescribed pooja times for each day.
(2) "Kumbhabishekam" reconsecration ceremony should be done here as soon as possible.
(3) "Chatrotsava" Divine Umbrella Festival, in honor of Mother Sita who performed it here first and who gave this worship procedure to us, should be resumed in this temple (especially during summer and winter months) as commanded by Lord Shri Rama.
(4) "Sani Kodai dhaana dharma" Saturday Giving Events should be resumed as a regular worship procedure in this and other temples on every Saturday. http://www.Agasthiar.Org/a/vpnov2010.htm

Devotees should arrange for these ceremonies in this powerful temple of Lord Sundara Kodanda Rama in this ancient sacred space of Ammanichatram. They should get together in a spirit of selfless service (and without any trace of ego) to complete these projects as their sacred duty.
