The Agasthiar Primer

Who is God?

The only way to define God is by saying that there can be no complete definition of God. God is beyond definition.

The great Siddha Thirumoolar points out the futility of defining God. He says that they are fools who attempt to describe the indescribable.

God is beyond our human calculations and comprehension.

God is in everything. Thirumoolar says that like the fragrance in a flower, sugar in sugarcane, clarified butter in milk and juice in a fruit, God is in everything. God's divine energy permeates the entire universe.

God is kadavul.
Kada = that which is beyond everything; transcendent Reality.
Vul = that which is in everything; immanent Reality.
God is the immanent indweller of all and the transcendent Lord of all.

God is One. God is many. The great saint Manivaasaga says that the One became the many.

God is a He. God is a She. God is both a He and a She. But God is also beyond He and She.

This land is God. The oceans are God. The rivers and lakes are God. The mountains are God. Everything is God. God is in everything but God is also beyond everything.

God is with form. God is without form. And God is somewhere in between too.

God is larger than the largest but God is also smaller than the smallest.

We cannot constrain God. That is, we cannot say God is this but not that. God is this, that and everything else. God is limitless. God is infinite. We cannot draw boundaries around God. We can not come to a conclusion about God. Doing so is an attempt to define God and this can not be done. God can step beyond all our conclusions.

If God is everything and if God is in everything, why then can't your naked eyes see God? Thirumoolar says that just like the eyes can see many things but can't see themselves, we see many things but not the Divine who has become these things. Manivaasaga explains this: Lord, you have become the entire universe, but the five senses can perceive you not. Even the most intelligent scientist doesn't see God because God is beyond the grasp of the human intellect.

How then can we see God? By transcending the limits of human perception through the instrument of divine love (bakthi) by the grace of a Sathguru.
