Nama = name.
Japam = meditation.
Keerthanam = singing.
Nama Japam = meditation on the divine name.
Nama Keerthanam = singing the divine name.
What is the procedure for meditating on the divine name?
Repeat it in your mind without moving your lips.
Doing this once is one repetition of nama japam.
Doing 108 repetitions is called ashtotaram. It's a very good spiritual practice.
Doing 1000 repetitions is called sahasra naamam. It's an even better spiritual practice.
But Sathguru Venkatraman says that spiritual aspirants must do atleast 10000 repetitions of
nama japam daily.
In the beginning, meditation on the divine name will have to be done consciously.
But with practice, this will become an involuntary subconscious spiritual exercise
that you engage in constantly. In other words, the divine name becomes
second nature to the soul. This is very important. All spiritual aspirants should
train themselves to do nama japam subconsciously.
They who meditate on the divine name
and sing the divine name will know God easily.
The more you meditate and sing the divine name, the more you develop love
for God. When this love becomes perfect, you will see God.
How can you understand this? Only by personal experience.
Meditate on the divine name,
sing the divine name and experience the divine bliss yourself.
To all those who want to see God, Sri Agasthiar has devised a simple
procedure. Meditate on the divine name 130 million times and God will
automatically appear before you. This is Sri Agasthiar's promise.
Why waste time questioning the existence of God?
Follow Sri Agasthiar's scheme and you will personally experience the
Truth.
Is it possible to meditate on the divine name 130 million times?
Of course. At the rate of 10000 times per day, it will take only 36 years.
Since our average life expectancy is much more than 36 years, it is
possible for each one of us to see God in this lifetime.
Of course, if you can't wait 36 years, you can meditate on the divine name
20000 times per day and you'll see God in just 18 years!
Just be determined and put in the effort.
You can meditate and sing the name just by yourself or you can do it in a
group. Group meditation and singing are great spiritual exercises.
When you do it alone, you alone get the benefit. When you do it in a
group, the entire group benefits. This sharing of the divine name is
of great importance. Share it with every one.
There are absolutely
no restrictions on meditationg and singing the name of God. Anyone can
do it and everyone must do it.
You can meditate on the divine name at any place and at any time.
You can do it while walking, eating, lying down or while doing anything.
How should one meditate on the divine name?
Meditate on it with love. Meditate on it
with all your heart. Meditate on it with single minded devotion.
Meditate on it like a calf
crying out for its mother and your progress on the spiritual path is
certain.
If you meditate on
the name of God with single minded devotion just once and God
will appear before you. Why then 130 million times? Because single
minded devotion is so rare. If all the cells of your body rise up in unison
and call out the name of the Lord, then just once will do.
Some of us can achieve this state quickly, but many of us reach this state
only after calling out the divine name 130 million times.
